Ten Things of Thankful – 5/29/18

Wow, another month is wrapping up and we are headed into June this weekend. After enjoying a really nice extended weekend with Papa Bear we’ve been catapulted into Tuesday, and I’d better get some thankfuls noted before I run out of time to meet the deadline!

My first thankful is Papa Bear having a two-day weekend, with both Sunday and Monday off.  As you know, he typically works six days a week (although they close at 3 PM on Saturday which helps a little).  We totally enjoyed the extra time together to relax, run some errands, enjoy some good dining out, and complete a couple small house projects too.

On Saturday after work we went shopping for some new comfy summer sandals and were delighted to again  be able to take advantage of the Skechers Outlet store buy one pair – get one pair 1/2 off deal.  I am always thankful for good bargains. Even more fun, we both chose the same pair of walking sandals in our respective sizes. Apparently the thing about older couples dressing alike is true. 🙂 Zoe says that we need to buy matching Hawaiian shirts next! Papa Bear loves Hawaiian shirts, my daughter refers to them as “John shirts” in his honor. 🙂

Then we headed to the furniture store to look for new recliners for the living room as my gift to Papa Bear for his 65th Birthday coming up next week. After testing out several, we both really liked a model that has individual power adjustments for the back and foot rest so that you can sit in whatever position you want with your feet up, and the headrest also can be adjusted forward or back for optimum comfort. We brought his home with us and mine is on order to arrive soon.  I am thankful that we found great recliners on sale at a price I could afford and that are wonderfully comfortable! They are also easy to move around for floor dusting.

I am thankful that Papa Bear and I will make the same choices on almost everything. It’s funny how our personalities are somewhat different with him being far more outgoing than me, yet feel very similarly on the basics. It is extremely rare for us to disagree, and that makes our relationship so easy, he’s the best, best friend ever!

I am thankful for the storage bins I found at the Tractor Supply farm store on Sunday. Now I’ve got a way to safely store and easily access the 50 lb. bags of birdseed and 25 lb. bags of cat food I buy regularly, and the bins fit neatly underneath the clothes rod in the laundry room.

While on the subject of critter food, I have to say once again how blessed I feel to be able to enjoy the company of not only our five furkids indoors, but also the rabbits, ground squirrels and birds that come to enjoy the food and water I put out for them. I know they especially appreciate fresh water in these hot days, and I appreciate watching them! One of the little ground squirrels is clearly pregnant with her belly nearly dragging on the ground, it’s so cute!

I am trying really hard to find reasons to be thankful for what it appears is going to be at least a two-week run of triple digit weather temperatures. It is 106 outside again today. I honestly do not love it.  Being out in heat makes me sick, it is hard on the critters, and it increases the both the severity of our drought here and the risk of grassfires. There is currently a 90-day burning ban in effect in our county, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t be careless with a tossed cigarette.  So ok, I’m not a fan of summer here, but… I am still thankful for good AC in both our house and vehicles, so that I am able to stay  comfortable as much as possible, and I am thankful that I will likely survive it. It gives me something easy to complain about, and I don’t have to look for other reasons. 🙂

I am thankful that my two favorite (and only) nephews have decided to share apartment space on a trial basis.  It is so expensive for young working people to afford housing, pay off school loans, and still have money left for phones, foods, and dating. They are two years apart, and as I reminded them, survived living 16 years together at home.  My sister tells me that it’s somewhat like The Odd Couple, and yet they are enjoying each other’s company, so we’ll see how it goes. I am proud of them for giving it a try.

I am thankful that Papa Bear was able to give my older sister some good advice about a vehicle problem that saved her not only money but a lot of stress and worry over a holiday weekend.

I am thankful that both my son and his girlfriend, and my niece and her boyfriend were able to get out and do some fun things this weekend, all of them were due for some relaxation, and it made me smile to see their texts and photos popping in to share.  I envy my son and his visit to the much cooler mountains resort in Pidgeon Forge; my niece and her boyfriend spent most of the time on the lake not far from her home in Minnesota in his new-to-him boat, playing at fishing and having a great time.

I am ever thankful that Papa Bear is so easy to please, whether it comes to making lighter meals on hot summer nights, or changing our plans for his birthday since it will be far to hot to be out fishing. We’ve decided to spend a couple days in Lubbock instead, we always find something fun to do to pass the time and it’s nice to relax away from home. Hotel swimming pools are wonderful for cooling off too!

Last but not least this week, I am thankful every day for my quiet, peaceful life at home now, for reaching a place of contentment with myself and my life, and for having Papa Bear to share it with.  I am so very, very blessed! ❤

Blessings to each of you in the days ahead… Look for reasons to be thankful in your life, and remember to be a blessing to someone else!

  1. That is great that you could find some recliner chairs that are comfortable and easy to move around. Sometimes they can be a bit difficult to move.
I’m sure your sister appreciated receiving some car advice that she could trust.
It is great that your nephews are willing to share an apartment to share expenses.
The weather you are having in your area is enough to zap the energy out of anyone. Thank goodness you have air conditioning. Hope you have a good week.

  2. Wonderful list of thankfuls. Happy Birthday to Papa Bear! I just discovered a Skecher’s outlet yesterday. Unfortunately, they didn’t have my giant size 11 in any that I wanted. XO

  3. Your post makes me smile a lot. Your relationship with Papa Bear reminds me so much of mine with My Dearest Teaching Widower. We don’t dress alike but we enjoy many of the same things. We do have a peaceful and loving relationship, too.
Your comment about the squirrel means I need to start checking our own squirrel squad! They do love the bird feeder cast offs, and what fun to watch the birds munch and crunch!
Oh, I hope we do not reach triple digits. After weeks of rain and mild temps, we are heading into the 90s today. Perfect mosquito breeding weather, but the trees and plants are thrilled. And you have that drought. No fun at all. AC is huge, isn’t it? When we lived in northern California, we could survive without it, but right now, it’s humming along. Yours must be BUZZING!
    Thanks again for hosting TToT!
